Writing is a lonely occupation. While friends and family can be a good source of support and comfort to a writer, oftentimes, they simply don't understand what the writing life entails. Only another writer is familiar with the difficulties of the writing process and the solitude that often accompanies it. Becoming part of a writing network can be a significant advantage to both new and established writers.
Ideas
Great minds think alike and this is especially true of writers. A writing network essentially offers the writer access to a pool of ideas as well as the opportunity to bounce around a few of their own. The writer is able to brainstorm as part of a larger group rather than individually and this in turn, serves to broaden the scope of their creativity. When writer's block sets in, the writer has a ready wealth of ideas and information to turn to.
Critique
No writer enjoys having their work critiqued, but the process can be made easier when it is personalized to a degree. A writer is usually more comfortable being critiqued by someone they know, rather than an anonymous editor. Having one's work critiqued by a group of experienced writers is the equivalent of having a personal editor on staff. Constructive criticism is often better received when the writer is not intimidated by the source.
Community
The feeling of camaraderie and acceptance that goes along with being part of a writers' network is unmistakable. The writer is readily accepted among his or her fellow writers and is never made to feel excluded. By being part of a network, the writing life becomes just a little less solitary.
Motivation
The best motivation to a writer can often be another writer. Being part of a writing network is the same as having one's own personal cheering section. Successes and failures are shared and there is always someone to rely on who can offer the right encouragement. When the writing process seems overwhelming, the network exists as a reminder to not give up.
The writing life is not an easy one and for those whom it chooses, the road can often be long and difficult to navigate. Joining a network of writers can make the trip less confusing and can offer a writer the support they need to excel at their craft. Every writer questions whether the writing life is right for them at one point or another. It is at this moment that the writing network can make the difference between failure and success.
