Social networks like LinkedIn offer a valuable service to writers looking to promote their work and connect with others in the publishing industry.

There are many social networking sites to choose from, from Facebook to Twitter, but not all of these are ideal for creating a professional, business-only public profile. However, it is important today for freelance writers to develop an online presence as a way to find readers and promote their work.

LinkedIn is not a general social site, but a professional tool that thousands are already using to connect with others, find jobs, and build their businesses. For freelance writers, LinkedIn is one of the best networking options available.

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a website that allows users to create a professional, public profile. Many think of it as a public resume or portfolio. A personal LinkedIn account is free, with upgrades available for business accounts.

A LinkedIn user has the option of including their name, occupation, education, and past employment on their profile, like a resume. Users are free to include website and blog links, a summary of their skills and special abilities, associations with any groups, and list any awards or accolades.

Once the account is created, users can add other LinkedIn users to their contacts. Messages can be sent through LinkedIn's "InMail" system. Another option for users is to include a phone number, address, or IM to their profile.

LinkedIn for Freelance Writers and Editors

Because of the professional nature of LinkedIn, it is one of the best options for anyone looking to connect with others in the writing and editing industry.

Once a user creates his profile, he can select the "writing and editing" industry, and add a headline like "Freelance Writer" or "Professional Writer and Blogger" to be displayed with his name. Writers can add links to their various blogs and websites, or a link to their online portfolio, great for employers searching for writers.

A fantastic feature for writers on LinkedIn is the TypePad "Blog Link" application. Under inbox, click applications and select "Blog Link" to install. The app will pull the most current blog posts from any blogs or website the user has displayed on his profile and feature them on the profile for other writers, editors, and potential employers to see. This is a great way for writers to get more exposure and traffic for their blogs.

Benefits of LinkedIn for Freelance Writers

In addition to connecting writers with others in the industry, LinkedIn allows users to easily search for jobs in dozens of categories with an advanced job search. An Answer feature lets users ask questions publicly and receive help from thousands of other users. Writers also have the option of searching for LinkedIn companies by industry.

Freelance Writing: Find Work and Connect With LinkedIn

There are thousands of opportunities awaiting freelance writers in all fields. By making sure their work is highly accessible, and by reaching out to other writers and editors, freelance writers will greatly increase their chances of publication.
